Why We Chose Florida: Moving From Canada to Florida as a Family

When we tell people we are moving from Canada to the United States, one question usually comes immediately afterward:

Why Florida?

The easy answer would be sunshine.

After enough Canadian winters, that certainly doesn’t hurt.

But the real answer is much bigger.

We are a family of five preparing to leave Ontario and build the next chapter of our lives in Florida. Choosing where to relocate was never going to come down to weather alone.

We had to think about our children, schools, housing, careers, healthcare, taxes, business opportunities, lifestyle, community, and what we wanted our everyday life to actually look like.

The more we researched, the more Florida kept rising to the top.

For our family, it represents a combination of opportunity and lifestyle that we struggled to find anywhere else.

That doesn’t mean Florida is perfect.

It means that after looking at the trade-offs, Florida is where we believe our family has the best chance to build the life we want.

Moving From Canada to Florida Wasn’t Always the Plan

Our decision to move back to the United States came before our final decision on Florida.

I already had a deep connection to America.

I was born in Canada but moved to the United States when I was 13. I attended high school and university there, became a U.S. citizen, and eventually returned to Canada in 2011.

So when our family began seriously discussing leaving Canada, we weren’t starting with a blank map.

We knew we wanted to return to the United States.

The bigger question was where.

America is enormous, and life can look completely different depending on the state, city, and community you choose.

Texas came up.

Arizona came up.

Other parts of the Southeast came up.

But Florida kept pulling us back.

Eventually, the conversation changed from:

“Where in the U.S. should we go?”

to:

“Where in Florida should we build our life?”

The Florida Lifestyle Fits the Life We Want

One of the biggest things we want from this move is more usable time together as a family.

Canadian winters can make family life feel incredibly seasonal.

For months of the year, outdoor activities become more difficult, daylight disappears earlier, and simply getting everyone out of the house can feel like a production.

Florida obviously changes that equation.

We like the idea of our children being able to spend more of the year outdoors.

Pools.

Parks.

Sports.

Walking trails.

Day trips.

Beaches.

Outdoor restaurants.

Theme parks.

Weekend drives.

We understand that Florida summers can be brutally hot and humid. We are not imagining 12 months of perfect weather.

But we would personally rather manage heat than spend another several months every year organizing life around snow, ice, slush, freezing temperatures, and short winter days.

That is a lifestyle preference.

For our family, it matters.

We Want Our Children to Grow Up With More Experiences

Our three children are at very different ages, which makes this move particularly interesting.

We are not just thinking about where we want to live today.

We are thinking about where they will go to school, make friends, play sports, find their first jobs, attend college, and eventually begin building lives of their own.

Central Florida offers an enormous amount for families.

There are obviously the major attractions everyone knows, but the part that interests us more is the day-to-day family environment.

Growing communities.

Youth sports.

Schools.

Parks.

New neighbourhoods.

Restaurants.

Entertainment.

Outdoor activities.

And access to a much larger number of experiences within a relatively short drive.

We want our kids to grow up feeling like there is always something new to explore.

We also want them to see opportunity around them.

Not simply entertainment, but people building companies, changing careers, moving across the country, taking risks, and creating new lives.

That kind of environment can shape how children think about what is possible for them.

Central Florida Became Our Target

We are particularly interested in the area west of Orlando.

Communities such as Winter Garden, Horizon West, Windermere, and surrounding areas have caught our attention as we research where our family could eventually settle.

We are looking for a combination of:

Strong schools
Family-oriented neighbourhoods
Safe communities
Reasonable access to Orlando
Space for our family of five
A home with a pool
Access to everyday shopping and services
Parks and recreation
A community where our children can put down roots

We are not choosing a house from Canada and hoping for the best.

There is still a lot of research ahead of us.

School boundaries matter.

Insurance matters.

Property taxes matter.

Traffic matters.

Commute times matter.

Housing construction matters.

Even two neighbourhoods that look close together on a map can provide very different experiences.

We plan to document that entire process because choosing where to live may end up being one of the most important decisions of this move.

Florida Gives Us Room to Think Bigger

Lifestyle is only part of the equation.

We also want to build.

One of the biggest reasons we are excited about returning to the United States is the opportunity to grow businesses, invest, create content, and pursue projects that may not have made sense for us before.

The size of the American economy changes what is possible.

A business does not necessarily have to be built for one city, one province, or even one state.

You can think nationally from the beginning.

That is incredibly appealing to us.

Our Move to USA itself is part of that.

We do not know exactly what this becomes five or ten years from now.

That is part of what makes it exciting.

We want to put ourselves in an environment where taking that risk feels worthwhile.

Taxes Are Part of the Decision — But Not the Whole Decision

Whenever Florida comes up, taxes usually come up too.

And yes, the tax environment is part of what makes Florida attractive to us.

We want to be able to earn, invest, build businesses, save for our children, and create long-term financial security for our family.

But moving to Florida solely because of taxes would be an incredibly shallow way to make a decision this large.

Every state has costs.

Florida homeowners have to think seriously about property taxes, insurance, maintenance, storm risk, utilities, and rapidly changing housing markets.

There is no magical place where families suddenly stop paying for things.

The question is whether the overall equation works better.

For us, we believe it does.

We are looking at the complete picture rather than one line on a tax return.

Housing Is One of the Biggest Questions We’re Researching

Like many Canadians considering moving to Florida, we spend a lot of time looking at real estate.

Probably too much time.

It is easy to open a listing and imagine your family living there.

The harder part is understanding what that home actually costs to own.

The purchase price is only the beginning.

We need to understand:

Property taxes
Homeowners insurance
Hurricane and storm considerations
HOA fees
Utility costs
Maintenance
School zones
Commute times
Future development around the neighbourhood
Resale potential

We also need to translate everything back into the reality of moving our finances from Canada to the United States.

That means this is not simply a Zillow search.

It is a financial decision that could shape the next decade of our lives.

Our goal is to eventually buy a home where our children have room, where we can spend more time outdoors, and where we genuinely feel like we are building something permanent.

We Know Florida Has Problems Too

We want this website to remain grounded in reality.

There is a tendency online to compare the worst version of one country with the best version of another.

We do not want to do that.

Florida has problems.

Home insurance has become a serious issue for many homeowners.

Hurricanes are real.

Summer heat can be intense.

Traffic can be frustrating.

Some areas have experienced enormous population growth.

Housing is not cheap everywhere.

Healthcare in the United States requires planning.

And moving away from friends and family has an emotional cost that cannot be measured in dollars.

We are considering all of that.

The goal is not to find a place without problems.

The goal is to choose the set of trade-offs that works best for our family.

After years of thinking about it, we believe Florida offers that balance.

Moving to Florida Is About More Than Leaving Canada

This may be the most important part.

We do not want our story to become solely about what we are leaving behind.

There are certainly things about Canada that helped push us toward this decision.

Cost of living.

Taxes.

Healthcare access.

Economic concerns.

And questions about where we believe our family will have the strongest long-term future.

Those issues matter.

But eventually, constantly focusing on what you are leaving becomes exhausting.

At some point, the move has to become about what you are building.

That is where we are now.

We are thinking about our first home in Florida.

Our children’s schools.

Our first Christmas there.

Our first summer.

Building businesses.

Making new friends.

Having family visit.

Creating traditions.

Learning a completely different routine.

And eventually reaching the point where Florida no longer feels like the place we moved to.

It simply feels like home.

We Still Have a Long Way to Go

We are not packing the moving truck tomorrow.

Our family is still navigating the immigration process, preparing financially, researching communities, planning the logistics of an international move, and figuring out what our lives will look like once we arrive.

We see uncertainty.

And we see possibility.

It will almost certainly be harder than we expect.

But we would rather take the chance on building the life we want than spend the next decade wondering what would have happened if we had tried.

Florida is where we have decided to try.
